With our partners across the NHS and social care now mobilising at scale in response to the developing COVID-19 pandemic, the role of the AHSNs is to support them by helping them source and take full advantage of the most relevant innovations and technologies that can improve care for patients and support our services in this challenging context.

Nationally, the AHSN Network is part of a coordinated NHS response to identify and enable the implementation of technologies that respond to areas of highest priority action. Similarly, in each region, the AHSNs are part of a system-wide approach, led by our regional NHS offices, to support our local health and care organisations – connecting them with potential solutions and offering up the specific operational or clinical skillsets of our teams where relevant.

Oxford AHSN has been working with the following innovations to support our colleagues on the frontline.

Roche Influenza Point of Care Test - Point of care (POC) influenza tests for use in emergency departments, community and urgent care settings. Roche Liat PCR Point of Care test for influenza A & B patients who meet criteria will have the flu test done at point of care and will receive a result in up to 20 minutes, resulting in reduced length of stay and better patient flow.

FujiFilm Influenza Point of Care Test - Point of care (POC) influenza tests for use in acute medical units (A&E), community and urgent care settings. ImmunoAG Point of Care test for influenza A & B patients who meet criteria will have the flu test done at point of care and will receive a result in up to 15 minutes.

Lumos ARI Point of Care Test - Point of care (POC) influenza tests for use in acute medical units (A&E), community and urgent care settings. For rapid analysis of the body’s immune response to an acute respiratory infection (ARI). The first and only rapid, all-in-one point-of-care test device that can identify a clinically significant acute respiratory infection and differentiate viral from bacterial causes.

Horiba CRP/FBC POC Test - Point of care blood tests for use in emergency paediatric units, GP practices and community hospitals. Horiba MicrosemiCRP* and whole blood assay. To better diagnose patients with severe infection and to reduce unnecessary admissions.

Abbott i-Stat POC platform - Improving pre-hospital diagnosis and informed discharges at scene in the >65s. Abbott i-stat Alinity placed with Specialist Paramedics based in Berkshire.  Specialist paramedics use of Point of Care (POC) blood testing to assist in clinical decision making.

We will help with the implementation of technology freeing up valuable clinician time by facilitating more rapid diagnosis and enabling diagnosis out of hospital.
